Tropical Storm Philippe Strengthens as Two Other Systems Stay Active

NHC – In the North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico, active weather systems are capturing meteorologists’ attention.

The National Hurricane Center has issued advisories regarding Tropical Storm Philippe, currently situated in the central tropical Atlantic.

Southeastern Gulf of Mexico: Presently, the southeastern Gulf of Mexico experiences disorganized showers and thunderstorms due to a surface trough of low pressure and an upper-level trough. Any further development is expected to be gradual as the system moves westward, with the possibility of strong upper-level winds impeding growth by mid-week.
Formation chance through 48 hours: Low – 10 percent.
Formation chance through 7 days: Low – 10 percent.

Eastern Tropical Atlantic (AL91): Several hundred miles south-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, a small area of low pressure generates disorganized shower activity. Favorable environmental conditions may foster gradual development, with the potential for a tropical depression forming around mid-week as the system tracks west-northwestward across the central tropical Atlantic.
Formation chance through 48 hours: Low – 20 percent.
Formation chance through 7 days: Medium – 60 percent.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Philippe navigates the central tropical Atlantic, contending with wind shear.

As of the latest advisory issued at 11:00 AM AST on September 24, 2023, Philippe’s coordinates place it approximately 1175 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands, with maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour and a minimum central pressure of 1000 millibars.

While strengthening is not significantly anticipated in the next 72 hours, ongoing monitoring remains crucial.

Coastal areas are currently not under watches or warnings, signaling no immediate threats. Philippe maintains a westward trajectory at 12 miles per hour, with a future shift toward the west or west-northwest expected.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles from Philippe’s center. However, land hazards are absent at this time.
