‘It’s an incredible honour’: Slater’s coaching future revealed

“I believe they are only getting started.”

Billy Slater has issued an ominous warning to those south of the border, a warning that has signalled his coaching intent for the years to come.

Queensland legend Slater has set his sights on orchestrating a new State of Origin dynasty, with the champion fullback-turned-coach extending his future at the Maroons’ helm.

Having guided the state to back-to-back series victories since taking the reins from Paul Green, the 40-year-old has inked a new three-year contract to remain the head coach.

There is still unfinished business for the Melbourne Storm premiership winner, who masterminded two brilliant victories to secure the shield this year, before Queensland fell at the final hurdle in their bid to lock down a rare clean sweep.

Slater has ushered in a new era of Maroons - the likes of Murray Tualagi, Reuben Cotter, Reece Walsh and Jeremiah Nanai have shown they had the means to be 10-year players in the esteemed jersey.

And he believes that despite the success they have already attained, there were bigger things to come.

“It’s an incredible honour to be the Queensland coach. I’m excited about the journey that this current group of players and staff have embarked upon,” Slater said.

“I believe they are only getting started. From the very beginning, I was drawn to this role because I deeply understand the importance of this team to all Queenslanders.

“I’m a proud Queenslander and this team means a lot to me. It has been a massive part of my life and I’m extremely grateful to get the opportunity to help other people not only fulfil their dream, but also inspire our state.”

Queensland Rugby League chief executive officer Ben Ikin said last week they were closing in on retaining Slater, declaring that even without an extensive resume of coaching experience, his understanding of “what it takes to win at that level” and insights from master coaches Craig Bellamy and Mal Meninga had primed him for further accolades.

“To be able to lock in someone of Billy’s calibre is a brilliant outcome for our Origin program and the people who work with and support the Maroons,” Ikin said.

“Over the past two years we’ve witnessed a team that has made Queenslanders immensely proud, and it’s been Billy’s vision and leadership driving that.

“Our players are not only going to new levels on the field, but their commitment to engaging with our fans across the state has been first class.

“We’re excited to have Billy lead our team for the next three years and we can now step up planning for 2024.”
