The Palaszczuk government’s most ardent union critics has ramped up its attacks on Labor following the weekend death of a worker at a roadwork site east of Brisbane.

A police spokesman said the worker, a 56-year-old Ormeau man, died at the scene and the forensic crash unit would assist Workplace Health and Safety’s investigations into the incident.

Redlands MP Kim Richards confirmed the man died on the Cleveland-Redland Bay Road duplication project on Saturday.

“To his family, friends and work colleagues I offer my deepest condolences and that of all Redlanders for this very tragic loss,” she said.

CFMEU state secretary Michael Ravbar said the man, a surveyor, was crushed to death by a truck at Seymour White-controlled job site.

“A fortnight ago we saw thousands of building and construction workers march on Parliament House to demand the Palaszczuk government fix the dysfunctional WorkSafe Queensland,” he said.

Ravbar said the death was totally preventable and came after repeated union warnings about the need to modernise “outdated” regulations surrounding heavy plant and equipment.

“This is yet another shocking incident overseen by the failing Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Mark Bailey.

“Construction workers have had enough of Bailey’s apologies. We’re sorry that Bailey is still in his job.
