11 top Premiership goals as Rangers rattled by 5 stunners, Mark O'Hara double delight but Stephen Humphrys strike 'best ever'

There was no shortage of wonder goals in the 2022/23 campaign and Record Sport picks out some of the best.

Allan McGregor might want to look away now as we pick out some of the top strikes of the season just finished. The Rangers keeper stuck around for one more campaign before an emotional farewell from Ibrox after 16 years over two spells in Govan.

But even he probably couldn't have imagined some of the shots he'd have ended up picking out the net as rivals produced some top goals against him. And ones he could have done little about. Jon McLaughlin also conceded to a couple of wonder goals in the early part of the season before losing his place to McGregor, including Jota's goal for Celtic which was voted the best of the season at the PFA Scotland awards.

That left a few scratching their heads after Stephen Humphrys netted from his own half for Hearts against Dundee United. And there were plenty of others straight out of the top drawer.

How Rangers could line up next season under Michael Beale as new recruits and transfer targets join Ibrox stalwarts

Here, Record Sport looks at the pick of the bunch.

  1. Stephen Humphrys v Dundee United

It simply has to be the pick of the goals from the 2022/23 cinch Premiership season. The 25-year-old wowed Tynecastle with an outrageous strike from his own half after initially picking the ball up just outside the Jambos' own box. Like a rocket, the ball arrowed towards goal and gave Mark Birighitti, who had been a bit off his line, absolutely no chance. Then Gorgie boss Robbie Neilson said: "A sensational goal and I don't know if there's been any at Tynecastle (as good). I've certainly been here a long time and I think that's the best one I've seen."

  2. Josh Campbell v Rangers

This was a ripsnorter of a game at Easter Road early in the season. Giovanni van Bronckhorst saw his men reduced to nine men with John Lundstram and Alfredo Morelos both sent off. But it looked like they might hang on for a vital win until the young Hibs midfielder executed a tremendous half-volleyed goal that salvaged a point for Hibs.

  3. Mark O'Hara v St Johnstone

Mark O'Hara netted a memorable volley against St Johnstone in November

The St Mirren man's striker against the Perth men was nominated for the Premiership goal of the season. It was a sensational first-time volley but he admitted it was bittersweet as they were pegged back in that game as Saints earned a share of the spoils.

  4. Mark II (v Rangers)

Mark O'Hara blasts home a superb first goal for St Mirren at Ibrox

The Buddies midfielder produced not one but two brilliant goals during the season. After that 25-yard howitzer in Paisley, he came up with this corker at Ibrox. The midfielder controlled Greg Kiltie's deflected cross on his chest and sent a brilliant volley into the opposite top corner for the first of his double during the Buddies' 5-2 loss to Rangers.

  5. James Tavernier v Celtic

The Light Blues skipper is no stranger to netting a spectacular free kick and this was an outrageous effort at Parkhead as he sent the ball over the wall and in off the underside of Joe Hart's crossbar for the first of his two goals in a 3-2 derby defeat.

  1. Stephen Kelly v Kilmarnock

The Rangers loan man unleashed an unstoppable volley into the roof of the net after the ball spun up following a deflection from Joel Nouble's cut back.

  2. Jota v Rangers

The Portuguese won the PFA Scotland goal of the season award for this chip against Rangers in September. He netted netted Celtic's second in the 4-0 victory.

  3. Duk v Ross County

The Red Army were sent into raptures in Dingwall when the former Benfica man hit the back of the net. The Staggies got an injury time leveller to deny him the winner but that shouldn't take anything away from this piece of brilliance. Jonny Hayes sprung in behind down the left and slid across to the Cape Verde forward, who superbly flicked it up for himself before volleying acrobatically beyond Ross Laidlaw.

  1. James Brown v Rangers

This was the first goal of the wing back's career and he'll struggle to better it. It was an absolute screamer of a long range rocket shot which left Allan McGregor with absolutely no chance as the Saints recorded their first win over Gers in 12 years.

  2. Josh Ginnelly v Aberdeen

The winger came up with a stunning equaliser as the Jambes came from behind to beat the Dons. His curling effort into the top corner would have been a goal of the season contender if it hadn't come so late in the campaign.

  3. Liam Scales v Rangers

This was an incredible effort from the Aberdeen man but did he mean it? The Irishman sent a 30-yard 'shot' from the nearside touchline over Allan McGregor to help the Dons beat Gers for the first time in seven years at Pittodrie.
