'A simple trick helped me become happier and healthier - anyone can do it'

Sophie Worsley felt unhappy in herself for years and wanted to get fitter and healthier but didn't feel motivated until she saw a photograph she didn't 'recognise herself' in. That was the catalyst the 22-year-old needed to kickstart her health journey.

The GP receptionist from Royton, Greater Manchester, was spending time with her family when her mum snapped a picture of her in January 2021. When Sophie saw the photograph, she didn't like what she saw and went on a personal journey to feel better about herself.

She told the Manchester Evening News: "I didn’t recognise myself anymore. I thought, 'I need to do something about it' and that was the start of the journey."

To help her feel more supported, Sophie decided to join Beeweighed, a weight loss support group based in Greater Manchester. She also started Zumba classes which she went to twice a week.

But she credits her three-and-a-half stone weight loss to simply eating smaller portions. For Sophie now, an average food day includes having a cereal bar and a cup of tea for breakfast, either a pasta pot or a salad for lunch, and 'whatever she feels like' for tea.

She also said that she used to eat off 'big plates', and since using her 'little sister's plates' she feels more satisfied.

Previously, Sophie wore a dress size UK 18, and now she wears a UK 12, and said people have said she looks 'really well' after going from 14 stone to 11.

She said: "I feel absolutely amazing. I realised I needed to do this for me and not anyone else and try and block out thinking other people are judging me.

"I'm really proud of how far I've come."
