Cam Newton has been offered a route back into football by Antonio Brown, enticing him with a huge cash incentive to play one game for the the team he owns.
Brown may no longer be in the NFL but the wild receiver is the owner of National Arena League team Albany Empire, who only just played their first game under new investors. Due to incomplete paperwork and lapses in paying players their new start under Brown was delayed, but he's now reached out to Newton to try and get the quarterback on board.
Despite only just getting over issues with the rest of the team, Brown is offering Newton $150,000 to play on June 17, but the free-agent is yet to respond. It comes after Brown stated he would play for the Empire on Saturday, but never kitted up.
The Empire lost 49-27 against Fayetteville Mustangs on Saturday without Brown in their lineup. There was no sign of the wide receiver on the field despite sharing a promotional image of himself suiting up for the Empire on Twitter, with a link to a ticket portal.
Brown was in attendance, instead opting to watch the game from the owners' suite rather than get involved. However, he's now sent a request to Newton and suggested that they could link-up on the field which suggests he still is looking to play.
"If anybody seen @CameronNewton let him know he hasn’t thrown me a touchdown in a game yet and now we finally can make it happen @thealbanyempir 6/16/23 in Albany NYC," Brown posted on Twitter. "I’m offering Cam 150k one game play with me please spam his account."
Newton remains a free agent despite taking part in Auburn's Pro Day back in March with the intention of earning another contract in the NFL. Newton hasn't played since leaving the Carolina Panthers in 2021, and no opportunities have presented themselves.
The former Panthers quarterback was the No.1 overall draft pick back in 2011 and even named NFL MVP back in 2015. He was named offensive player of the year that same season, but trailed off towards the end of the decade.
Newton is yet to respond to Brown, but it could be some spectacle if both NFL rejects agree to link up for Albany on June 16. It may also be a great time for Newton to showcase his skills in a competitive setting, if earning an NFL deal again is still a priority.
