Armed police swooped on a McDonald's last week as horrified diners watched a teenage boy walk in wielding a gun - which turned out to be fake.

A 14-year-old was arrested over the incident after a firearms team stormed the restaurant in Fleet, Hampshire on Friday.

The drama unfolded shortly after 5pm at the fast food branch - leaving customers terrified.

"We were just ordering our food then all of sudden police officers with guns walked in," one diner said. "It was very scary to see."

They added: "They went out the back with the staff."

Police have confirmed that a 14-year-old boy was arrested for possession of the fake firearm and having it to intimidate or cause fear of violence.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said: "We were called at 5.16pm on Saturday, 3 December to a report that a teenager with a suspected firearm had entered McDonald's on Fleet Road in Fleet.

"Firearms officers attended the scene and located an imitation firearm.

"A 14-year-old boy, from Fleet, was arrested on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm in a public place and possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

"He was also arrested on suspicion of using threatening, abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress."

The force spokesperson added: "He has been released on conditional bail and our enquiries are ongoing.

"It is believed this was an isolated incident and there is no wider risk to the public at this time."
