Best Just Eat takeaway in Scotland as Ayrshire pizzeria nominated for award

An Ayrshire eaterie is in the running to be named Scotland's best takeaway.

A Slice pizzeria in Kilmarnock has only been open for a few months but has made a huge impression in that time with their authentic Neapolitan pizzas.

The Titchfield Street takeaway has been named among four other Scottish venues in the Just Eat awards.

Nippon Kitchen in Glasgow, Chicken Union in Stirling and Namaste Delhi in Aberdeen are also in the running.

A Slice made the shortlist after a panel of independent judges selected the takeaway from the entrant's submission form, customer reviews and commercial factors. The same criteria will be used to choose a winner along with factoring in customer votes.

The winner of the Scottish title will then be put forward to be crowned the best takeaway in the UK.

The Scottish winner will win £1,000 cash prize and the overall UK winner will take home an additional £5,000 prize.

A Slice posted on Facebook: "We are delighted to announce that we have been selected as a finalist for the Best Takeaway (Scotland) in the Just Eat restaurant awards.

"To help us win this accolade, we need the support of our local pizza lovers. Please vote for us here."

A Slice is a joint venture between experienced hospitality manager Simonas Griauzde, 33, and professional chef Carmine Barretta, 26.

Ahead of opening in September, Simonas revealed that Carmine grew up making pizza on the streets of Naples — the spiritual home of authentic pizza — with Simonas saying it was likely his business partner learned to make dough before he kicked a football.

Simonas, from Stewarton, previously said: "Carmine and his grandma used to sell pizzas on the streets of Naples. He's Naples born and bred. He probably knew how to roll a pizza ball before he knew how to kick a football or anything else.

"The technique and recipe he uses has been passed over from generation to generation.

One Just Eat reviewer said: "Best pizza I've ever tasted, wanted to try authentic and wasn't disappointed.

"Generous amounts of toppings, the Just Eat pictures don't do it justice. Was also literally the fastest Just Eat delivery I've ever had too.

"My friend laughed because he's never seen an authentic pizza and it wasn't nuclear yellow but you can't please everyone. Can see why this place is winning awards! Can't wait to try the next one!"

Another wrote: "Finally! It's so refreshing to see some real quality pizza being made in town, better than any other I've tried here.

"This is my go to place for pizza now, nowhere else comes even close in Kilmarnock."
