A burning corpse was found hanging from a tree in Griffith Park,Los Angeles, according to city officials.
The Los Angeles Fire Department says it made a gruesome discovery Tuesday afternoon near the park's merry-go-round.
Authorities say the victim's age, gender and race are not yet known.
Firefighters who arrived at the scene said the victim was already dead when they arrived, according to NBC Los Angeles.
"It's a death investigation. We're helping bodies recover," he told The Los Angeles Times, a spokesperson for the LAFD.
The Los Angeles Police Department has launched an investigation into the death.
Griffith Park is he one of the largest urban parks in the United States, covering 4,210 acres of his land in the city's Los Feliz neighborhood.
"Located in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains, the park's elevation ranges from 384 to 1,625 feet above sea level," said the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.
"Because of the dry climate, the park's plant communities vary from coastal sage shrubs, oak and walnut woodlands, to the wooded riparian vegetation of the park's deep canyons." 23}
