Businesses welcome chance to strengthen links with potential future employees at Lanarkshire event

A conference aimed at strengthening the links between businesses and schools has been hailed as a great success.

The Developing the Young Workforce Conference was held recently by North Lanarkshire Council at Motherwell Concert Hall was attended by over 300 delegates including 100 businesses, the majority of which were local small and medium sized enterprises.

The conference included keynote speakers, videos and case studies, an exhibition space and question and answer sessions with questions posed by delegates and answered by expert panels made up of employers, senior council officers and stakeholders.

It brought together school leaders, employers, young people and key partners to help build stronger working relationships.

With the aim of working together more effectively to improve outcomes for young people and meet the needs of employers.

Councillor Angela Campbell, convener of education and families, told Lanarkshire Live: “We are extremely proud of our strong track record in providing a curriculum which offers meaningful and relevant work-related learning opportunities which equip children and young people with the skills, qualifications and experiences they need to flourish in life beyond school in the world of work.

“This first class education and skills based curriculum enables young people to maximise their talent and realise their full potential and contribute to the local and national economy.”

The success of the conference marks the start of increased contact between schools, further and higher education and employers. Feedback from the day was also good, with many attendees leaving happy with what was discussed.

A spokesperson for Education Scotland said: “Change is happening and we are moving in the right direction.”

Morrisons Construction were one of the businesses present who welcomed the opportunity to engage with schools in Lanarkshire.

A spokesperson said: “After speaking to schools today we will take forward a new idea of tailoring talks to metaskills and subjects to contextualise learning.”
