Couple criticised after dying stunning waterfall blue for their gender reveal party

A couple are facing criticism after deciding to dye the waters of a stunning natural waterfall bright blue to celebrate their baby's gender reveal party at the weekend.

The parents-to-be posted videos and images of the event on social media on Sunday before deleting them as they caused a massive outcry.

Images show the Queima-Pe River waterfall, near the municipality of Tangara da Serra in Brazil, coloured in bright blue to announce the gender of their baby.

The waterfall is 18 metres (59 feet) high and is located six kilometres from the centre of Tangara da Serra.

The site is famous as a destination for ecological tourism activities, residents have said.

The stunt backfired with many on social media calling for the couple - not identified in local media - to be arrested for an environmental crime.

Others said they were worried about possible water contamination for people further downstream.

The Queima-Pe River, after which the waterfall is named, is the main source that supplies the municipality of Tangara da Serra.

Recent periods without rain have caused frequent supply crises in the city.

"Congratulations...you will be the parents of a beautiful environmental crime", commented environmental engineer Vanessa Costa.

After the videos went viral, the Secretary of State for the Environment of Mato Grosso state confirmed they are investigating the matter to find out if an environmental crime was committed.

A statement said: "The inspection will investigate the environmental damage caused by the material thrown into the water.

"If there is an environmental crime, those responsible will be charged and may be held accountable for an environmental crime."

One of the people in charge of the party claimed that no chemical product was used to colour the waterfall blue, according to G1.

However, he said he would only comment further once the investigation ends.

No charges have been filed as of Tuesday.
