Desperate young Russian screams in pain as pal breaks his leg to avoid Putin's draft

A young Russian man screams in pain in disturbing new footage after asking his friend to break his leg to dodge Vladimir Putin 's military draft.

It comes after the Russian president last week ordered the mobilisation of an additional 300,000 fighting-age men across the country for the war in Ukraine, leading to a rush of protests and forcing many to flee to neighbouring countries.

Others who are unable to leave have opted for reported acts of self-harm to avoid being called up, including one desperate man who made an extraordinary request for his pal to fracture his leg.

In the clip circulating online, the unidentified young person sits at the bottom of a set of stairs and places his feet on the steps while anxiously waiting for his his friend to carry out the deed.

Seconds later, his friend throws himself down the stairs and purposefully lands on his thigh, causing his bones to crack.

The young man then lets out a chilling scream, and can be seen recoiling as he deals with the intense pain.

A caption on the video reads: "Conscripts in the Russian Federation break their legs to avoid being mobilised"

The toe-curling video is just one example of the dismay felt by young Russians who have either been issued with notices or fear they will soon be so.

One man fearing the draft told the Economist: "We have fallen into hell - that's how I see it.", while another said he hoped his poor eyesight would spare him from the draft.

Elsewhere, flights out of Russia have sold out over recent days and cars have piled up at border checkpoints, including pro-Western Georgia - which allows Russians to enter without a visa.

Two exiled news sites - Meduza and Novaya Gazeta Europe - both reported that the authorities were planning now to ban men from leaving following the exodus, citing unidentified officials.

Railway operators across the country are also said to be placing restrictions on the travel of military-age men.

Mobilisation has also led to the first sustained protests in Russia since the war began, with one monitoring group estimating at least 2,000 people have been arrested so far.
