Five London boroughs hit by new 20mph speed limit – are you affected?

London’s drivers are set to be hit by more restrictions on their journeys, as a 20mph speed limit is imposed on main roads in five of the capital’s boroughs.

Transport For London is bringing the change in from Friday, March 31, with the limit introduced on ’17 miles of red routes’ as part of plans to roll the 20 miles per/hour speed out across a wider network.

Depending on where you live in London, and whether you drive, you stand to be affected by the new speed limits – but just which boroughs are they going to be in?

Here’s what you need to know…

Which London boroughs are being hit by the 20mph speed limit?

The new speed limit will affect roads in the following boroughs:

  • Camden
  • Islington
  • Hackney
  • Haringay
  • Tower Hamlets

This will affect main roads which run through the boroughs, including Euston Road, Mile End Road, Seven Sisters Road and Pentonville Road.

Given the speed limits already in place in residential areas, the limitations are likely to see almost all roads in the borough reduced to a 20mph limit.

It’s part of wider plans Transport For London has to introduce lower speed limits elsewhere in the city, with parts of South London set to have similar limits imposed later in the year.

TFL is aiming to have almost 140 miles of main roads in the capital to have the limits introduced by May 2024, and has put forward proposals to have similar restrictions introduced in parts of south and west London.

They have launched local engagement for 20mph routes in Royal Borough of Greenwich, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Lewisham, Southwark, Wandsworth, Merton, Bromley and Lambeth – and work on introducing these could begin later this year subject to the consultation.

Will Norman, London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, said: ‘The facts are clear, a person hit by a vehicle at 20mph is five times less likely to be killed than at 30mph.

‘We are determined to build a safer, greener London for everyone and the continued expansion of the 20mph programme on TfL roads is playing a vital role in making the capital’s roads safer for people to walk, cycle and use public transport.’

The moves come as part of London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s ‘vision zero’ plans, which aim to reduce road deaths down to zero by 2041.

Previous data from Transport for London suggested that areas within the congestion charge zone where the 20mph speed limit had been introduced had seen a 25 per cent reduction in road deaths.
