Grand Designs viewers unimpressed by 'hideous' home with unusual roof installation

An unconventional property on Grand Designs: House of the Year caught the attention of Channel 4 viewers last night, with it branded "hideous" and "ridiculous" by some.

The series features properties longlisted for the Royal Institute of British Architects' House of the Year award. The latest episode showcased "pioneering homes" on the list.

This included a home known as Mountain View. It notably has an extension which boasts a two-dimensional silhouette of a mountainscape made of foam aluminium on its roof.

Grand Designs host Kevin McCloud, 63, visited the property in London. He was told that the roof decoration had been inspired by a "hyper-realistic mountain" at a theme park.

The interior of the extension includes demolished walls used as shelves and recycled furniture. Kevin referred to entering the space as being a "theatrical experience".

The property - which he said was "wild" and against "the rules of conventional taste" - caught the attention of viewers. Some took to Twitter to share their thoughts.

"There's pioneering and there's plain ridiculous," wrote one. Another said: "Looks some sort of abandoned, children's play house. With a 'Mountain View' foam cut out. Hideous".

It was described as "awful" by another viewer, whilst a fourth tweeted about the episode: "Don't put any of the houses through this week. Especially this mountain house."

Another said: "'Hyper-realistic mountain' Errr .... really?" Whilst a sixth wrote: "It's not the best that's for sure". Another said: "So an extension with a stupid board to pretend it's a mountain. Yeah, really clever stuff. Yawn!"

Not everyone was as critical about it though, with some viewers saying they preferred it to the other properties in the episode. One person wrote: "This was my favourite tbh."

During his visit, Kevin met architect Matt and his wife Laura. The couple - who live in the home with their two children - spoke about the extension and its mountainscape.

Laura said she'd been "very concerned" initially. She added: "I knew that it was his one opportunity, given that it's our house, to really go for it and do something that he loves".

Grand Designs: House of the Year continues next Wednesday (December 7) on Channel 4 from 9pm. You can catch up on previous episodes through All4 now.
