Hamilton Accies stalwart and new dad Brian Easton didn't let sleepless nights stop him from lifting trophy

Doting dad Brian Easton insists he was never going to let some sleepless nights caring for his newborn daughter stop him playing for Hamilton Accies in the SPFL Trust Trophy final.

But he admits he never dreamed of lifting silverware in the twilight of his career.

The 35-year-old, who won the Scottish Cup with St Johnstone almost a decade ago in the 2013/14 season, became a father for the first time earlier this month when he and his fiancee welcomed baby Amelia into the world on March 9.

And it has been a hectic month for Accies’ club captain, getting to grips with a life-changing moment off the park while fighting a battle for cup glory and league survival on it.

Easton climbed off the bench in Sunday’s 1-0 triumph over Raith Rovers to help injury-ravaged, 10-man Accies preserve the advantage Reghan Tumility’s first-half strike had given them.

Despite having played just twice in two months before the big game, the adrenaline of playing in a cup final got him through any lingering tiredness and he was on hand to make a vital goal-line clearance late in the game.

So he was thrilled to round off a memorable March in the Easton household with an SPFL Trust Trophy triumph.

He said: “It has been some month with the baby coming but it has been great so far.

“It has been harder for the missus because she’s up every couple of hours feeding her, and the lack of sleep isn’t great.

“But I have been loving every minute of it.

“I was fine on Sunday. I wasn’t tired or anything. Thankfully, it was a cup final so the adrenaline was going.

“I’ve been fortunate to have already played in a final so I kind of knew the moments when the adrenaline comes and when you get the butterflies.

“When we showed up at the stadium on the bus that was when the excitement and the buzz really kicked in. My fiancee and Amelia obviously couldn’t make it along because the baby is a bit new, but my dad came along to see the game.

“And that was great because the club had put together a nice video the day before the final, of all our families saying ‘good luck’.

“So to go and win it, that’s the sort of thing you play football for, to win things and be successful.

“But this is something I hadn’t counted on happening.

“I never thought I’d win any more silverware so it was a really special day, especially with it coming for Hamilton, the club I started out with in my career.

“I have a great relationship with the club and a great affinity for them so it was great to give the fans a really nice day.”

The Accies players partied well into the night as the team mixed with jubilant fans in the town’s bars and clubs.

For Easton though, daddy duties ensured he was one of the few with a clear head on Monday morning.

The club legend, now in his third spell at New Douglas Park said: “I was home early.

“On the way back we stopped off at a couple of the pubs that the supporters go to and I managed to enjoy a bit of that.

“It was great seeing how happy that made everyone.

“I didn’t manage to make it out to the early hours with the rest of the boys celebrating but I don’t mind that too much.

"I’m a bit older and happy to let the younger lads enjoy it. For the younger ones, hopefully it’s something that makes them say ‘I want more of that’.”
