I’m a professional declutterer & my ‘core 4’ method will help you tidy up in four simple steps

OVER the years, people gather hundreds of unwanted items that never find a home and end up as clutter.

And if you don't keep on top of it, the prospect of tidying up can seem very overwhelming.

Professional organiser Kayleen Kelly, who posts under the acronym @kayleenkellyorganize, took to TikTok and shared a video showing a step-by-step guide of how her 'core 4' method makes decluttering possible.

In the clip, she begins by explaining step one, which is to focus on one room and remove anything that doesn't belong in the space.

"We're working in our parents' bedroom and we found a lot of kids clothing, household items, paperwork, office - all things that don't belong," Kayleen explains.

"You have to focus on one space at a time. So we're going to collect it and set it aside.

After reducing the visual clutter significantly, she says you can then move onto step two - categorising the clothing starting with things on the floor/out in the open and then working into drawers and shelving.

"We have a lot of it so we take little bites starting with loose clothing that we found on the floor in the bedroom or the closest," she says.

Kayleen explains this takes you into step three which is the 'second rule purge' using the three second rule - making quick and confident decluttering decisions by taking three seconds to look at an item, and deciding whether you want to keep it or not.

"We've addressed the loose clothing now onto anything that needs hanging," she notes. "Again using the three-second purge.

"Now we're moving onto any drawers or shelving…"

Once purging is done, it's time to move onto step four which is 'contain' - finding functional homes and putting things away.

"We're going to take a look at the storage and the amount of time we have," she says. "Start hanging and folding and figuring out our placement, customising our storage and making sure everything is easy to access and put back away."

"Thank you for sharing & keeping it all in one video. Love the ending! Wow," enthused one.

A second commented: "This must be the most satisfying job on earth!"

A third praised: "I needed this inspiration."

Meanwhile, a fourth penned: "Wow that blew my mind!!!"

A further added: "Amazing job!"
