'I named my baby using Roman numerals - but trolls say that's not the worst part'

No one can tell you what to name your baby, and although your choice might not be popular with everyone, it's ultimately your decision to choose a name you love.

However, posting the news of your baby's birth online might cause some people to voice their opinions on your name choice - especially if you've opted for a moniker that's a little on the unusual side.

One mum who recently shared her birth announcement on Instagram has had trolls slam her choice of name as "awful" and "cringy", as she decided to use Roman numerals to name her baby.

The post described her birthing experience (

The mum revealed in a post, which was later shared on Reddit, that she and her partner had named their baby Metta IV, which when said together would be pronounced like the word "metaphor".

She shared her baby's name alongside a post detailing her childbirth experience, which read: "She's here. Born January 7th, 2020 in our little home by the sea.

"Her big sister awoke to watch her emerge from my waters and her big brother awoke to meet her early the next morning.

"Our birth journey was sacred. Me and [my partner] communicated through sound and telepathy for the whole ride and we were so proud of her when she was finally in our arms.

"Welcome to Earth little one. Metta IV (pronounced metaphor)."

Commenters on Reddit were left baffled by the whole post, as many of them said that the description of the birth made the Metta IV's unique name "the least cringy part" of the post.

One person wrote: "This whole thing is so awful the name might actually be the least cringy part."

While another added: "The name isn't even the worst part of this post."

Other commenters were simply confused by what the mum meant when she said "communicated through sound", as they pointed out that "talking is sound".

But not everyone was against the mum, as some tried to explain that the baby's name isn't as bad as it could have been if the parents had opted to spell things differently.

Someone said: "I find myself actually glad they went so hard against all spelling rules - Metta isn't as bad as Meta for word association. At least if this child goes by Metta later in life, it'll be an odd but not immediately cringe-worthy name."

As another agreed, posting: "Ok, every line she writes is weird. But the little girl can at least go with Metta! She doesn't have to tell people about the IV. Metta is a little weird but not too much to automatically cringe!"
