James Sands Rangers transfer exit question answered as New York City boss plays it cryptic on possible MLS return

New York City head coach Nick Cushing has taken a coy approach to rumours surrounding a possible Rangers exit for James Sands.

The American international signed an 18-month loan deal with option to buy from the MLS club in January 2022 but has featured sporadically since Michael Beale took over as manager, having been a regular under Gio van Bronckhorst. Sands has been used in both defence and his natural midfield position but the arrival of Belgian Nicolas Raskin pushes him further down the Ibrox pecking order.

Beale said last month that, 'we’ve got a couple of loan players in and we’ve got to make a decision on whether we want to retain them long term, and if we didn’t, maybe there’s an opportunity for them to go back as well', and it's prompted further debate over Sands' future. But Cushing is giving nothing away on a potential Big Apple return.

When asked to address rumours of Sands coming back, he said: "I don't think it's right to discuss individual players and especially players who aren't in our squad.

"I think for us, there are many negotiations going on across all of our squad. Recruitment at the moment is a big focus of ours.

"But I do not want to comment on individual situations."
