Kate Middleton's subtle nod to Queen at royal reception ahead of Sussexes' award

Kate Middleton is famously fond of celebrating royal tradition by wearing gems from the royal family’s collection, and as she appeared alongside the Prince of Wales for the annual Diplomatic Corps reception this evening with a pair of antique diamond earrings known to have belonged to her late majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

She wore a crimson Jenny Packham lace dress with the Lotus Flower tiara and the Queen's Royal Family Order.

The first Diplomatic Corps reception in three years was marked by the attendance of King Charles, 74, and Queen Consort Camilla, 75, as well as the Prince and Princess of Wales.

The royals showed little sign of tension as they greeted diplomats from around the world, despite the imminent arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Netflix documentary, which is expected to contain at least a few tricky revelations.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing to accept the Ripple of Hope award from the Robert F. Kennedy foundation, after taking what has been described as an “heroic” stand against “structural racism” within the royal family.

While no overt accusations have been made by either side, anonymous briefings from within both the Sussex and Windsor camps have ratcheted up the tension.

In one clip from the documentary trailer, Harry appears to accuse the establishment of playing “a dirty game” against him and Meghan.

The upcoming six-episode documentary promises to give viewers a look behind the curtain of their public life, but it has been heavily criticised by royal expert Russell Myers.

He said: "For a couple of wanting privacy, they've just blown it out of the water."

His comment comes as podcast host Zoe Forsey noted: "It's very dramatic, isn't it? I pictured it was going to be more fly on the wall, behind the scenes… and I thought it was gonna be very soft, but it's not - it sounds like they're going hard.

"There's a clip of Meghan crying and Harry kind of leaning back on his chair looking very, very distressed”.

Some royal fans have noted that the clip featuring Meghan crying shows her sitting next to a blanket priced at £2,000, with Twitter users joking they will open up a GoFundMe for the Duchess.

Tickets for the Ripple of Hope gala are selling for up to $1million (almost £850,000). Previous winners include Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
