Liverpool transfer round-up: Klopp eyes two World Cup stars with talks 'scheduled'

Liverpool have set their sights on two World Cup players ahead of January as Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his squad for the second part of the season.

The Reds have been faced with countless injuries throughout their team in the first half of the campaign, with Klopp now backed into a corner to make some big decisions and potentially sign some fresh faces. And while there are strong links to the likes of Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat, the Moroccan isn’t the only one who Liverpool have been watching.

Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest transfer stories coming out of Anfield…

Talks ‘scheduled’ for Portugal defender

Liverpool may be strongly linked with players in more forward positions but the latest reports have suggested that their first piece of business in January could involve a new central defender.

The Reds have plenty of options alongside Virgil van Dijk at the back, with Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and even Nat Phillips all competing for a place at centre back. However, Liverpool have been linked with a move for highly-rated Benfica centre-back Antonio Silva.

That’s according to Portuguese outlet A Bola, via Liverpool Echo, who claim that Liverpool's interest is 'concrete' and that 'firm talks' will be held with Benfica after the World Cup - where Silva played the full 90 minutes in the 2-1 defeat to South Korea.

Reds ‘keen’ on French striker

Liverpool could look to sign French striker Randal Kolo Muani after watching and being impressed by his performances so far this season.

The Reds held previous interest in the 24-year-old before he joined Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer, where he has since registered eight goals and 10 assists in 22 games for the German outfit. As a result, he earned a late call-up to France’s World Cup squad.

But according to Foot Mercato, the Reds are said to have been ‘seduced’ by Muani’s qualities and profile, as they continue to scout him closely, although it is thought that they will have to pay in the region of £69million to secure his signature.

Liverpool receive Musah setback

Liverpool have received a potential setback in their pursuit of USA midfielder Yunus Musah following reports that Valencia are set to offer him a new contract.

The 20-year-old has gained plenty of attention following his recent performances at the World Cup as he held his nation to reach the last 16, and the Reds are just one of a number of clubs who have been linked with a move for the midfielder.

However, as a result of the mounting interest in one of their star players, Valencia have already opened talks with Musah’s agent over a fresh deal, according to 90min. The midfielder already has a release clause of £86.2m in his current contract.
