Man arrested 'for throwing egg at King Charles' during royal walkabout

A man has been arrested after an egg was reportedly thrown in the direction of King Charles during a walkabout.

The man, in his 20s, is now in custody suspected of common assault after the foodstuff was allegedly thrown at the monarch in Luton town centre, Bedfordshire Police confirmed.

The force said the suspect will now face questioning after being arrested in St George’s Square.

Charles had been greeting members of the public when he was diverted away from the crowd outside Luton Town Hall by security staff following the incident, which happened shortly after his arrival.

He was then moved to a different area and carried on shaking hands with members of the public.

King Charles is in Luton for a series of royal engagements, which have included visiting the newly-built Guru Nanak Gurdwara, a Sikh place of worship.

The monarch was met by community leaders and members of voluntary organisations, including the Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Susan Lousada, and the mayor of Luton, Councillor Sameera Saleem, before turning his attention to the gathered public outside Luton Town Hall.

This isn't the first time the common baking item has been hurled at the King - less than a month ago an Extinction Rebellion protester pelted Charles with four eggs.

The man was heard shouting: "This country was built on the blood of slaves," before declaring Charles was "not my king" and hurling the eggs.

The protester was eventually identified as Patrick Thelwell, 23, who had previously stood as a Green Party candidate.

Thelwell was released on bail by North Yorkshire Police following the incident.
