Man Utd news: Erik ten Hag makes transfer decision amid Cristiano Ronaldo defence

Manchester United return from the international break to a big test against rivals Manchester City with preparations already ramping up for Sunday’s derby.

But a big decision is set to be made off the pitch, following Erik ten Hag’s latest claim on Man United’s ‘next Gary Neville’. Elsewhere, Bruno Fernandes has leapt to the defence of Cristiano Ronaldo following criticism in the Portuguese media.

Meanwhile there has been some good news for Ronaldo, who is set to make a significant financial gain thanks to the latest big government decision.

Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest stories coming out of Old Trafford.

Ten Hag’s transfer decision on ‘next Gary Neville’

Man United will reportedly trigger a one-year extension clause in Diogo Dalot's contract ahead of the January transfer window.

The Portugal international's existing deal expires in June 2023, but the Red Devils have the option to extend it by a further 12 months. Dalot, 23, has become United's first-choice right-back this year after a difficult start to his Premier League career, after being signed by former United manager Jose Mourinho in the summer of 2018, who compared him to club legend Gary Neville.

Dalot has continued to be a mainstay in United's team this season following the summer appointment of Ten Hag as manager. And, according to the Manchester Evening News, the right-back is hopeful of receiving a new contract from the Dutchman.

Fernandes defends Ronaldo after backlash

Fernandes has leapt to the defence of Ronaldo after the Man United superstar produced another lacklustre display as Portugal slumped to a 1-0 defeat against Spain on Tuesday night.

The Portuguese press had already urged Fernando Santos to drop the 37-year-old for the crunch clash after Ronaldo had also failed to impress during the emphatic 4-0 win over Czech Republic at the weekend.

But Fernandes has insisted that Ronaldo should not bear the brunt of the blame for Portugal's Nations League failure and backed his Old Trafford teammate to bounce back from his recent struggles.

Ronaldo set for financial gain

Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng ’s mini-budget has raised eyebrows across the world with the International Monetary Fund outlining its fears and the Bank of England making an emergency intervention.

The only clear beneficiaries from the initiatives launched last Friday are those who earn more than £155,000 a year because they will now pay a lower rate of tax, falling to 40% from 45%. And that is good news for any top-flight footballer, with calculations indicating the average Premier League player is set to benefit to the tune of almost £250,000 a season.

Top earners such as Cristiano Ronaldo stand to take home more than £1m extra every 12 months. The Portuguese veteran is on £25.6m a year at Manchester United and on the previous rate he would have paid just under £12m in tax. But that figure will now shrink to £10.6m.
