Married female prison officer had affair with inmate at UK's 'cushiest' jail

A married female prison guard who had an affair with an inmate at the UK's 'cushiest jail' has been spared prison time after she admitted the relationship.

Roxanne Walker confessed to police: "I've made a mistake. I've fallen in love with Daniel Carter; it's completely wrong."

A judge spared Walker jail because no illegal items or assistance were given to the prisoner, and because she has a dependent son aged seven, reports North Wales Live.

Walker was dismissed from her prison job in January 2022 after a year.

The 34-year-old and the prisoner had had a history of 'conditioning' staff at HMP Berwyn

She was given a suspended eight month jail term for wilfully misconducting herself.

She also admitted an unrelated offence of possession of cannabis and was given a further one month jail term. But the total nine-month sentence was suspended for two years.

Prosecutor Ryan Rothwell said Walker was employed at HMP Berwyn from January 2021. She was sent on a routine course which included anti-corruption training.

But between May and October that year colleagues became concerned about her behaviour towards prisoner Carter. On May 3 she was seen "grasping" his left arm and sitting on a sofa with him having an "inappropriate discussion" on another occasion.

On July 21 a custody manager saw her go into a cell with a container of food and emerge without the container. She was confronted about the incident but said she did not see anything wrong.

By October 2021 Walker was spoken to by a prison service manager. Walker said she was "disappointed" that her colleagues had reported her, the court heard.

It emerged Carter had a history of "conditioning" staff.

Managers checked prisoners' phone records and found Carter's were linked to a number registered to a "Leanne Baker" whose number was linked to the defendant Walker's phone.

On October 4 Carter was moved to HMP Cardiff while Walker was being investigated. But further enquiries revealed Carter had spoken to Walker by phone and they had discussed what prison staff knew about their relationship.

When she was confronted again Walker admitted: "I have fallen in love with Daniel Carter. It's completely wrong." But she stressed there had been no sexual contact.
