Meghan and Harry 'can’t stay out of the limelight’ over fears of lost influence

A royal expert and author has said that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle feel they cannot stay out of the limelight as they will "lose their influence." Speaking after the couple's decision to take "parental leave" after the birth of their daughter Lilibet, author Phil Dampier explained Harry and Meghan will worry that people "could forget about them" if they stayed silent.

In a matter of days, the public will hear the couple express their thoughts on a number of topics from racism to mental health in their six-part self-titled Netflix series 'Harry & Meghan'. While the explosive nature of the show was clear from the short but dramatic trailer, one insider has confirmed that some of the couple's comments are "fiery".

Following the birth of the couple's daughter, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, on June 4, 2021, the couple said they were taking a period of "parental leave" but a number of royal commentators were left confused after the couple continued to make statements.

Royal author Phil Dampier claimed that the couple may have felt as though people "could forget about them” if they were to take a step back and disappear from the headlines for a while.

Mr Dampier told The Sun: "I thought they were supposed to be lying low for five months, it was suggested they were going to take five months off to look after their young family – I don’t think it’s been anything like five months.

"They don’t seem to have been out of the headlines in the period they were supposed to be quiet so it is a bit strange. I think they must feel that if they are out of the limelight their influence could fall very quickly and people could forget about them.

"The Queen always says 'I need to be seen to be believed' and the same thing applies to Harry and Meghan.

"If they haven’t actually got a public profile and people aren’t seeing them they could quickly be forgotten about which clearly they don’t want. They will probably feel they need to get out there."

"If aired, they will be absolutely explosive. The topic of racism is discussed — plus claims that some royals opposed the marriage. The whole TV project is very driven by Meghan.

"The narrative is that Harry had to be removed from his family, in which he felt neglected.

"Mental health features too, and discussion about Harry having therapy over the loss of his mother and his father’s relationship with Camilla.”

The couple's explosive Netflix series will stretched across six episodes and will be released in two parts. The docuseries makes up part of Harry and Meghan's £110 million deal with the streaming giant and will be available to watch before Harry's memoir 'Spare' is released on January 10.

When it was announced that Harry was going to write a tell-all book, he said: "I’m writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become. I’ve worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story - the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned - I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think.

"I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what I’ve learned over the course of my life so far and excited for people to read a first-hand account of my life that’s accurate and wholly truthful."
