Meghan Markle is 'top choice for president' as she accepts anti-racism award

Meghan Markle is gearing up to accept a human rights award just weeks after she came top in a survey of potential presidential candidates.

Of the 1,500 Democrat respondents that voted, 27% favoured Meghan as the Democrat Party's next leader in a poll commissioned by The Express and carried out by the Democracy Institute in Washington.

The poll, published in November, came just weeks before tonight's (Tuesday, December 6) Ripple of Hope Awards Gala, which will see Meghan and her husband Prince Harry scoop up the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights award for their "heroic" stand against "structural racism" in the Royal Family.

Appearing on TalkTV, commentator Daisy McAndrew said the award showed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are "really stepping into the political sphere."

"[Meghan and Harry's win] will go down really well in liberal America, which is arguably the most important demographic for Harry and Meghan.

"That is where they want to make their bed and make their money, and that is where they've staked their claim.

"And it will go down pretty badly for those who really look at it in detail on this side of the pond because it's insulting, in many ways to the Royal Family. The Royal Family that many Brits still feel protective of and they don't recognise this as the Royal Family they think of.

"And that leads you to the next decision, why are Harry and Meghan allowing this? This is Meghan with Harry behind her, really stepping into the political sphere."

This isn't the first time it has been suggested that Meghan could make a career shift into politics.

The Duchess of Sussex's activism has seen experts repeatedly tip her for a stint in policy-making with some even predicting a presidential run in her future.

Following her keynote speech at the One Young World summit in September, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told the Daily Star: "Meghan seemed totally at ease when making her speech, she may, as has often been rumoured, go into politics one day."

But, Fitzwilliams added, the Duchess of Sussex missed out on possibly her best opportunity to help people across the world when she and Harry stepped down as working royals.

"It was as senior working members of the royal family that she and Harry could have realised their maximum potential to help others worldwide," Fitzwilliams added.

"This would have involved sacrifice and it was not what they were prepared to do."
