The mother of a 10-year-old boy killed in a dog attack last year has blamed the UK’s current laws for the rising cases. Emma Whitfiled’s son Jack Lis was mauled to death by an American bully or XL bully dog called 'Beast' at a house in Caerphilly on 8 November 2021.

The boy suffered "unsurvivable" injuries to the head and neck.

Brandon Hayden, 19, from Penyrheol, Caerphilly, was jailed for four-and-a-half years at Cardiff Crown Court after admitting to owning or being in charge of a dangerously out-of-control dog.

Amy Salter, 29, of Trethomas, Caerphilly, was jailed for three years for the same offence.

However, for Jack’s mother, no sentence was ever going to be enough.

She told TalkTV: “To me, that’s a piece of me that is missing. I am not going to recover from that.

“The two who are convicted, they can come out and they have got their families to go back to.

“They can go and do whatever they want to do. But I can’t.”

She further claimed that the current laws are too lax and Jack’s death was a result of that.

She said: “For me, I want to see a change from a whole spectrum.

“It goes from the beginning with the way of breeding dogs and it leads right to the end with sentencing the convicted.”

Police have recorded a 34 percent rise in the number of dog attacks in the past five years.

At the moment, only four breeds are currently banned in the UK and the dog which killed Jack wasn’t one of them.

But it has become more than just a ban.

She continued: “If I can stand up and say I want to see the change, and I can stop this happening to even one family, then that’s why I am here today.”

According to data shared for Freedom of Information Request to TalkTV, a total of 16394 people were attacked by the dog in 2018.

The number rose to 16984 in 2019 and 17375 in 2020.

The data further stated that the number of attacks increased to 19623 in 2021 and 21918 people were attacked bu the dogs in 2022.
