The husband and father of two is responsible for killing four of his family members and then himself inside their affluent Buffalo Grove, Illinois home last week, police reported.

Officers forced their way into the home after receiving a call from the mother's coworker and were greeted by the harrowing scene.

Andrei Kisliak, 39, is believed to have killed his 4-year-old and 6-year-old daughters, Amilia and Vivian Kisliak, his wife, Vera Kisliak, 36, and his own mother Lilia Kisliak, 67.

A dead animal was also found inside the home, police revealed.

Following the horror incident, Kisliak is believed to have committed suicide and was found dead among his family members' bodies inside the home.

Brian Budds, Buffalo Grove Police Chief, said all family members were found dead with "sharp force injuries", in what officers described as a "domestic-related incident."

Earlier that day, Vera's coworker had called the police over concerns about her safety, which led to police discovering the bodies.

Vera Kisliak is believed to have sought protection orders in August and September and filed for divorce in July.

Neighbours reported police had been to the Kisliak home in the past month and one local resident said she called the police in August over concerns about how Mr Kisliak treated the children, Fox News reported.

The Buffalo Grove police chief declined to comment on reports locals had raised concerns about Kisliak previously.

Police said the investigation into the case is still ongoing.

It comes after a similar incident of murder-suicide was confirmed by police in Phoenix, Arizona last month.

Jasen Michael Hudgens, 44, took the lives of his wife Marla Jordan Hudgens, 40, son Christopher Hudgens, 3, and 6-month-old twins Gwen and Faye Hudgens, according to police.

He then fatally shot himself inside the home, which was filled with cooking gas.

The family's babysitter reportedly called the police after she discovered the bodies when arriving at the family's home to begin her shift.

Similar to the Kisliak case, the marriage was believed to be ending.

At the time, family friend Brett Hagerty, who said the marriage was on the rocks, told CBS affiliate KPHO-TV: "We knew that that marriage was likely ending...but we never had any indication from her that she felt scared or threatened or unsafe".
