Reo Hatate distraught as Celtic star faces major layoff with hamstring injury

Just as they made a dream start against Atletico Madrid, Celtic's joy was dampened when Reo Hatate was forced off with a suspected hamstring injury.

The Japanese midfielder looked distraught as he made his way from the pitch after just five minutes of Champions League action. It took compatriot Kyogo less than four to fire Brendan Rodgers' side in front against the group favourites. He started then finish a lovely move involving a one-two with Matt O'Riley to lift the roof of Parkhead early on and let Atleti know they're in for a game.

But Hatate played no further part against the Spaniards. Amid the celebrations for the opener, he pointed to his hamstring which he appeared to overstretch when challenging for a bouncing ball. And it seemed to be the anguish of leaving the field rather than any pain in the muscle that was causing him the most distress.

Hatate was embraced by his manager as he crossed the touchline before heading up the tunnel for treatment. The Hoops will now face a sweat to discover how long Hatate will be missing for.

Celtic are in the midst of a hectic schedule, with a trip to Easter Road next up - a venue they have tended to struggle at over recent seasons. Then it's St Mirren at home next midweek prior to heading north for a meeting with Ross County.

Then it's the second part of the Atletico double header in the Spanish capital. Should it be a hamstring injury, then Hatate might be doing well to be fit for any of them. That could present an opportunity for Benfica loanee Paul Bernardo to stake his claim for a midfield start.
