SSPCA appeals to public after influx of pet rats in Lanarkshire

The SSPCA is appealing to the public to find homes for dozens of rats in their care after an influx of the animals arrived at their Lanarkshire centre.

Currently the centre, on Bothwell Road, Hamilton, is looking afer 42 of the rodents that desperately need suitable homes.

Scottish SPCA centre manager, Gillian Boyle, told Lanarkshire Live: “More than 45 rats arrived into our care recently after one of our inspectors removed them from unsuitable conditions.

“Although we have managed to find homes for some of them, our centre is at capacity after receiving so many of the animals at once so we are urgently asking for more potential owners to come forward.

“Will, Buckley and Jesse are just some of the rats who came into our care. Although they are young, they are lovely boys who can be rehomed together in pairs or groups.

“Given their age, these rodents will require somebody who is committed to daily handling and socialisation to help them become well-mannered. They will also need a large and secure enclosure with lots of play toys, tunnels and forage areas to keep them stimulated and happy.

“Rats are intelligent, highly social animals who form close bonds with their human carers. They have lots of character and make really rewarding pets.

“We are desperate to find loving homes for Will, Buckley, Jesse and the rest of our rats so that we have the space and resources for other animals who arrive at our centre and need our help.

“If you think you can offer these pets a loving home then please apply via our website."
