Teen airlifted to hospital after jumping from moving vehicle at Appleby Horse Fair

A 15-year-old boy has been seriously injured after jumping from the back of a moving vehicle.

Emergency services were called to Long Marton Road, Appleby, Cumbria on Friday evening, BBC reports.

Police said the teenager was in town for the horse fair, and the incident involved a car towing a trailer.

Witnesses have been asked to contact police.

The Appleby Horse Fair, which dates back to 1685, is a major cultural gathering for the Gypsy, Romany and traveller community.

It is one of the largest events of its type in Europe.

The Fair attracts huge numbers who come to witness horse sales and the tradition of washing horses in the river.

Last year, a horse tragically died and three people were injured in a crash between a horse-drawn carriage and a wagon on the A66.

The RSPCA has also previously appealed for the Fair's visitors to not buy or sell any puppies.

The charity’s chief inspector Rob Melloy said his team witnessed an alarming number of puppies being sold and bought at the event.

He said: ‘I can’t emphasise enough to Appleby visitors, that buying a puppy from the fair is really not a good idea.

‘Last year we saw a lot of puppies being sold and some were so sick they had to be put to sleep by a vet.

‘It is so tragic, but if people continue to buy them at the fair, breeders will continue to bring them each year.’
