Teens admit attack on Lanarkshire shopkeeper before stealing bottles of wine

Two teenagers beat up an Airdrie shopkeeper before fleeing with bottles of wine.

The pair, aged 16 at the time, forced their way into the premises despite the shopkeeper's best efforts to keep them out.

Airdrie Sheriff Court heard that the victim suffered bruises to his face, back and leg.

The teenagers, who cannot be named because they are under 18, admitted assault and robbery at Zafar Stores in Glencraig Street on October 21 last year.

Lauren Cole, prosecuting, said the victim saw the pair looking in the window about 6pm.

She told the court: “They entered the shop and walked around for a couple of minutes, but didn’t appear interested in buying anything.

“They left and the shopkeeper, who was concerned by their behaviour, went to lock the shop to ensure they couldn’t re-enter.

“However, the two accused forced their way in as he tried to hold the door closed. They punched the victim twice on the head, knocking him to the ground.

“One then kicked him twice on the head as he lay on the floor and pulled a metal fruit and vegetable stand down on the victim's back.

“His friend took two bottles of Buckfast from a shelf and left without making any attempt to pay.

“Police officers attended a short time later and identified both accused from the shop’s CCTV.”

Sheriff Joseph Hughes deferred sentence until next month for background reports and electronic tagging assessments.

Both teenagers had their bail continued.

They were also accused of robbing an employee at Shop Local on South Bridge Street in Airdrie of a bottle of alcohol on the same day, but their not guilty pleas to that charge were accepted.
