Van 'incinerated' after suddenly catching fire on busy Glasgow road

A van has caught fire in rush hour in Glasgow, halting traffic as emergency services descend on the scene.

Fire officers were called to Great Western Road, in the Kelvinbridge area, at around 4.20pm. A single appliance was sent to the scene of the fire, near Gartnavel Hospital, as cars mounted the central reservation to let it and an ambulance through.

Google Maps data shows that traffic is at a near standstill while firefighters address the blaze. It is unclear if anyone has been injured. A video shared on social media warned: "Avoid Great Western Road, both directions."

Eyewitness Connor Adair told the Record that sparks shot out from the underside of the van as the fire took hold and rapidly consumed the vehicle.

He said: "Me and my dad were driving home - all of a sudden the traffic stopped dead and we saw smoke. At first it started off white and three minutes later we heard an ambulance behind us, so we pulled over the embankment to allow them past.

"As we were driving over the grass the smoke started going black with sparks flying out the bottom of the van. I don't know how the fire actually started though.

"I just hope the guys in it are okay as I didn't see anybody standing around and we were there before the emergency services, so I don't know what happened to them. We finally got past after the fire brigade put it out.

"Looking through the back doors all I could see was the wiring from the seats left, nothing else - it just looked incinerated to be honest."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "We are in attendance at a vehicle fire on Great Western Road in Glasgow, which we were called to at 4.20pm. We have mobilised an appliance and it is in attendance dealing with the incident."

Police Scotland was contacted for comment.
