Who will win Liverpool vs Rangers? Our writers predict Anfield Champions League clash outcome

After heavy defeats against Ajax and Napoli, Rangers may have been thinking they could have done without a double header against Liverpool.

Then again, that would be a tad defeatist. True, Gio van Bronckhorst's men need to get points off the board after being blown away in their opening two Champions League Group A fixtures. Their slim hopes of making it out of the group will be ended with two defeats to the Reds in their next two encounters. At this stage, perhaps the best they can hope for is sneaking into third place and keeping their Euro campaign alive by dropping into the Europa League. However, even that looks a big ask at this stage.

Jurgen Klopp 's men have only won two matches in the English Premier League this season and were held at the weekend by Brighton and even found themselves 2-0 after just 17 minutes. Just a couple of hours earlier, Rangers cruised to a 4-0 win against 10-man Hearts at Tynecastle to temporarily go top of the Scottish Premiership before Celtic returned to the summit with a 2-1 victory over Motherwell.

As warm-ups go, it was pretty much perfect for the Ibrox side. But a trip to Anfield presents a different test entirely. The Record Sport team can see it being a long night on Merseyside for the Light Blues. Here's how they see the game going.

Jurgen Klopp’s side haven’t been hitting the target with their normal accuracy this season but Liverpool are still armed to the teeth and Rangers will be doing well to limit the damage.

It could be a long night for Rangers if Liverpool’s A listers feel they have a point to prove. Yes the Ibrox side have shown in the past they are capable of digging out massive results on the European stage. But Liverpool in full flow and on top form? That’s an entirely different ball game.

It’s a climb up the levels too high for a Rangers side who are going to be in for a long night against a side who will be smarting from some poor domestic displays. That doesn’t bode well for the Light Blues.

Liverpool have struggled for consistency this season but they still have outstanding weapons and will likely be too strong.

The Ibrox side appear to be over their confidence crisis while the Reds are fragile at the back so, like the Napoli game, they can put up a fight even away from home. But Jurgen Klopp’s men should still be too strong.

It’s been a stuttering start for Liverpool domestically and they were blown away by Napoli on Champions League matchday one. But they recovered well against an Ajax side that battered the Gers, who have struggled to get to grips with their Euro opponents.

Call me a romanticist, brand me a fantasist but I have a wee sneaky feeling Rangers can take something from Anfield. Yes it will require a large dollop of luck. But even more so it will need Liverpool to be at their worst and Rangers to be at their worst. These things can happen.
