The Arsenal star suffered a knee injury against Cameroon, while the Manchester United left-back also hobbled off in the 1-0 defeat.

But Brazil have been handed boost with Neymar set to return to action.

The Paris Saint-Germain superstar suffered ankle ligament damage in Brazil's opening game against Serbia which fans feared would rule him out of the whole tournament.

But a video went viral of the Brazilian magician doing some muscle work in the gym - trying to regain fitness for the knock-out stages.

One side that will not be in the last-16 is Uruguay having lost out to South Korea on goal difference and forward Edison Cavani took out his frustration by PUNCHING a VAR monitor after the game.

  • Roccuzzo steals the show

There was Messi magic on and off the pitch on Saturday night as the Argentinian family flourished at the World Cup.

The Paris Saint-Germain star, 35, scored a trademark goal to separate the teams as Argentina eased past Australia 2-1 in the last-16 clash.

It was his 789th senior goal on his 1000th appearance in football.

But his wife Antonela Roccuzzo also stole the show as she stunned fans.

The 34-year-old watched on as she sported a purple Argentina away shirt with her husband's name and number on it.

Showing off her midriff in a pair of ripped jeans and a purple handbag, Antonela smiled on the stands at the Al-Rayyan Stadium.

  • Hazard quitting

Belgium star Eden Hazard is reportedly considering retirement from international football.

Roberto Martinez's side crashed out of the World Cup in the group stage after they failed to follow up their win over Canada, losing to Morocco and exiting the competition with a goalless draw against Croatia.

Following Belgium's disappointing campaign, HLN are claiming that Hazard will make a decision on his future with the national team in the coming days.

He has made a breathtaking 126 appearances for his country, scoring 33 goals across a 14-year period.

But with injury problems plaguing his club career at Real Madrid, Hazard may feel he does not have another major tournament in him.

The same report also claims he is considering a departure from the Bernabeu having played just 72 times in three-and-a-half seasons.

  • Argies all but home

    Game management time for Argentina.

15 minutes to go and they are 2-0 up against Australia.

Man City ace Julian Alvarez scored their second, as the the South Americans look all but through to the quarter-finals.

  • Van Gaal's kiss

Louis Van Gaal gave Denzel Dumfries a big kiss on the cheek in his post-match press conference as he celebrated Holland reaching the last eight of the World Cup.

Man of the match Dumfries was sat next to Van Gaal while facing the media after Holland’s 3-1 win over USA in which he scored one and assisted two.

And Van Gaal said: "Denzel knows that the day before yesterday I gave him a big fat kiss, I am going to give him another…there you can see."

  • Argentina lead!

    And Messi has it!

Argentina have taken the lead against Australia.

It's taken 35 minutes until the deadline was broken.

    Can the Aussies fight back?

  • Salad days

Portugal defender Pepe left manager Fernando Santos in stitches after comparing the national team to a salad.

He began: "We have several ingredients but unless we put all the ingredients together... as our coach said, can I say it coach?"

Santos, already laughing at Pepe, then nodded.

The centre-back continued: "You see, we have different types of salad. I mean you can't have a tomato on one side, the onion on the other side. It's important to put all the ingredients together.

"Indeed, we have a high quality national team but unless we work very hard, unless we respect our opponents, unless we do what our coach says, we won't benefit so much from this quality.

"So the most important thing is to be aware regardless of who is on the pitch or not, we have to do our very best so that we can secure a win. And that's the most important thing."

  • Supportive Grealish

Jack Grealish says all of England’s fab five are desperate to start against Senegal - but the two that do will rally round the three that do not.

Speaking on the Lions’ Den on the FA’s YouTube channel, Grealish said: “It’s going to be one of those games you’ll be desperate to play in.

“It’s obviously difficult for the manager because he can only pick 11 players. I’m sure everyone is going to want to play in it.

“But no matter who he picks we’ll all be supporting each other.

“Because that’s one thing we have here, we have massive togetherness. I’m looking forward to it, it’s going to be a massive occasion.”

  • Ronaldo bites back

Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo has refuted suggestions that he swore at coach Fernando Santos after being subbed against South Korea.

He was quoted by reporters saying: "What happened was before my substitution, the South Korea player told me to get off quickly.

"I told him to shut up as he doesn't have that authority. There was no disagreement (with the coach)."

  • Bellingham's nerves

England star Jude Bellingham has admitted he was nervous about meeting Jack Grealish on international duty due to their former club's rivalry.

The midfielder used to play for Birmingham City, which has a big cross-city hatred with Grealish's former club Aston Villa.

He told TalkSport: "To tell you the truth, the first encounter I had (with Grealish) in the squad, I came down for lunch and it'd just been announced that I'm with the senior team.

"Obviously, I played for Blues and Jack played for Villa at the time.

"I didn't know what he'd say about it and I think it was a year after he got punched in the back of the head so I was thinking if he held that grudge or whatever.

"Then we come to the lunch line and he gives me a massive hug straight away and I just thought this is going to be sound."

  • Grealish didn't say 'sliced veg'

Jack Grealish knows his onions - and is adamant he did NOT say “sliced veg” in an interview with talkSPORT that went viral.

The England man appeared to use that phrase rather than the correct saying of “best thing since sliced bread” during the chat.

Grealish himself even admitted it sounded like he had cocked up the phrase when the footage was played back to him on the Lions’s Den, England’s You Tube channel.

And he jokingly suggested the audio may have even been doctored.

But the 27-year-old protested: “I ain’t the brightest spark in the world but I know the difference between slice bread and slice veg is.

“That video, I think someone tapped it!

“I was speaking to Hendo (Jordan Henderson) the other day, I was in the ice bath. He said , ‘that video, Jack…’ and I said ‘Geez, I actually said sliced bread’.

“When I listen to it, it does sound like I said sliced veg. But no one has ever said sliced veg! I didn’t say it.”

  • Full-time

Netherlands have beaten the USA 3-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

The Dutch are through after goals from Memphis Depay, Daley Blind and Denzel Dumfries.

USA threatened a comeback when Haji Wright scored to make it 2-1, but it's Louis Van Gaal's side who prevail.

  • Southgate ready for pens

Gareth Southgate has revealed England are ready for penalties.

"We are prepared. We have had three shoot-outs and won two. It is the one that you did not get over the line that you reflect on," Southgate revealed.

"We have done that. We are aiming to win the game and avoid extra-time as you would like to get a victory in 90 minutes but if we need to go 120 mins, if we go beyond that we have to be ready mentally and physically.

  • Sengal fine

Senegal appeared to put two fingers up at Fifa in their pre-match press conference yesterday to preview Sunday's England game.

The Lions of Teranga had been fined £8,700 by football chiefs for failing to put a player up for their session with the media the day before their win over Ecuador.

This time they did make sure one of their squad-members was in attendance… but picked their third-choice goalkeeper.

Alfred Gomis lined up alongside assistant Regis Bogaert, who was standing in for ill boss Alious Cisse.

That is despite the stopper playing ZERO games for club side Rennes this season and having next to no chance of featuring against the Three Lions.

  • Kane ready physically

Harry Kane has revealed he's match-fit ahead of England's last-16 clash with Senegal.

Kane said in a press conference: "I think it goes back to 2018 in the World Cup. I felt from a physical and mental side of things that I started great.

"I started the tournament with a lot of goals, used lots of energy and in the latter stages they dipped. I was conscious before the Euros of that but wanted to make sure I was ready mentally and physically.

"I would love to be sitting here with two or three goals for sure but I think the group stage has gone well and minutes-wise not too tough. I feel really good. Fit and sharp.

"Coming off the back of the Premier League schedule I am match-fit as I ever have been. Hopefully I can do well tomorrow and come into the best form."

  • Gimenez ban

Uruguay star Jose Gimenez could be banned for FIFTEEN games after elbowing a Fifa official as his side were knocked out of the World Cup.

South Korea's 2-1 win over Portgual sent the South American side home despite them beating Ghana 2-0 in a controversy-filled game.

Uruguay felt they should've had a penalty late on as Edinson Cavani was brought down in the box and after the final whistle the emotion got the better of plenty as tempers boiled over.

Gimenez completely lost his cool as he tried to confront the referee while he was walking off the pitch.

The Atletico Madrid star had to be held back by teammates as he shouted and chased ref Daniel Siebert.

Amidst the chaos Gimenez elbowed a Fifa representative in the back of the head.

  • Gabriel Jesus statement

Brazil shared a statement confirming Gabriel Jesus’ injury will not allow him to play in the 2022 World Cup.

A Brazil statement read: “As announced by the Brazilian FA after the game against Cameroon, players Alex Telles and Gabriel Jesus underwent tests on Saturday morning.

“Accompanied by the Brazilian National Team doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, they underwent an MRI on the right knee that confirmed the injuries and the impossibility of recovery in time to participate in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

“The coordinator of the Brazilian National Team, Juninho Paulista, is in contact with the sports directors of Arsenal and Sevilla to define whether Alex Telles and Gabriel Jesus remain with the squad in Doha to continue the treatment or return to their clubs”

  • Ronaldo tempted by Chelsea

Cristiano Ronaldo has been linked with a move to Chelsea after his dramatic departure from Manchester United.

Ronaldo has had two major offers from Saudi Arabian clubs Al Nassr and Al Hilal earlier on this week.

But reports suggest that the Blues’ owner Todd Boehly has held talks with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s super agent Jorge Mendes.

And the Portugal international is “tempted” by the move

  • 'Polish Mourinho'

Poland manager Czeslaw Michniewicz has been getting World Cup advice from Jose Mourinho, Max Allegri, Steven Gerrard and Xavi on how to beat the French, writes SunSport's Mark Irwin.

Michniewicz has been revelling in his ‘Polish Mourinho’ nickname after pulling off a defensive master class to steer his nation through to the last 16 in Qatar.

He said: “When I hear all the criticism, I can only smile. Because all the teams who were not defensive and let their opponents score easily in the group stage are already back at home and watching on TV.

“We were good at defending and our reward is a game against the world champions. If we can win against France, we could become the next champions.

“The comparisons with Mourinho are out of date but I will just tell you that football is all about winning trophies and being successful.

“I have spoken with Mourinho, Allegri, Xavi, Steven Gerrard, Fabio Cannavaro and all the other coaches who have helped to prepare my players so well for this tournament.

“And I hope this is not my last chance to thank them from the bottom of my heart. We always dreamed of leaving the group phase and we don’t care about any opinions of our team.

“The fourth of December in Poland is Barborka, the miner’s national holiday, and we will do our best to celebrate the day with victory against a wonderful opponent”

  • New FA chair

Debbie Hewitt, the Football Association's first female chair, combines a strong business background with proper football knowledge, writes SunSport's Dan King.

Hewitt, 59, remains on the board of Visa Europe and other blue-chip firms.

But among the interesting things to emerge from a reception at the British Embassy in Doha was the fact that the lifelong Liverpool fan also knows the words to England's 1982 World Cup song "This Time (We'll Get It Right)".

Maybe the FA have done just that by appointing someone who sees what needs to be done AND has the skills and experience to do it

  • Ready to Go

Kick-off is steadily approaching as Holland and the US look to become the first country to book a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.

After a crazy week of group stage football, can the last-16 keep up with the drama?

Follow every twist and turn with our live text commentary here.

  • Staying Put

Gabriel Jesus will stay put with the Brazil team for now while his injury is assessed.

Reports this morning suggest the striker will miss the rest of the World Cup - but it is not clear how severe his knee problem is.

ESPN's James Olley reports: "Gabriel Jesus is expected to remain with the Brazil squad in Qatar for the time being while the full extent of his injury is determined. Further updates expected in due course."

  • Lee's Big Role

LEE CARSLEY has played a key role in preparing England for today’s last 16 clash with Senegal, writes SunSport's Dan King.

The Under-21 boss was given the task of scouting the African champions and presenting his findings to Gareth Southgate and his backroom team.

Southgate has consistently given opportunities to fellow English coaches to be part of the senior set-up.

In 2018, then Under-21s manager Aidy Boothroyd joined the team for the World Cup in Russia just weeks after leading the Three Lions to victory in the Toulon Tournament.

Last summer, Newcastle assistant head coach Graeme Jones came on board and proved a popular and effective member of the group.

  • Senegal Blow

Senegal have suffered a World Cup blow with manager Aliou Cisse ill on the eve of their round of 16 clash with England.

The 46-year-old has been unwell for the last couple of days and did not take his side's pre-match press conference.

  • Start your engines

Poland striker Arkadiusz Milik reckons there’s only one way to stop Kylian Mbappe tomorrow - and it involves a motorbike.

The French forward has been in outstanding form this tournament and will be looking for his fourth goal of the World Cup against Poland.

Milik said: "How do we stop him? With scooters!

"He is one of the best players in the world and he is so fast that it will be difficult to keep up with him without a motor bike.

"So we need to play collectively and have very good co-operation because no-one will be able to stop him on their own."

  • Van Gaal on the defence

Louis Van Gaal had to launch another staunch defence of his tactics ahead of this game with criticism in Holland of his negative, dull style.

And he has made clear he is wary of the threat the US pose.

The ex-Man United boss said: "The USA is a very energetic squad, with physically strong players and that is tough for any opponent and you can tell that from their results.

“I think that they have evolved well. It’s typically American I would say, that they evolve rapidly and have many players in top European clubs so it goes without saying they would perform and achieve these results.”
