La scossa è stata alle 23.11 di venerdì sera, un terremoto fortissimo che secondo l'Istituto nazionale di geofisica del Marocco, ha registrato una magnitudo 7.0 della scala Richter (Amatrice registrò magnitudo 6.0).
L'epicentro è stato registrato nel comune di Ighil, a sud di Marrakech e secondo le prime notizie sono 632 i morti e 322 i feriti, di cui 51 in gravi condizioni, ma il bilancio fornito dal Ministero dell’Interno si aggrava di ora in ora.
