The Dean of the Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Liberia, Prof. Dr. Josephus M. Gray on Wednesday paid a courtesy call on his Indian counterpart, Prof. Dr. Anviti Gupta, Dean, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Sharda University, Knowledge Park, Greater Norda, New Delhi, Republic of India.
Prof. Gray’s visit also extended to the Sharda College of Media, Film and Entertainment which serves as a temple of creativity that fuels the imagination of aspirational students and offers them a medium to convert their creativity into a career, with the help of an array of industry-recognized programs. The two colleges, Humanities and Social Sciences and Media, Film and Entertainment offer undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. programs.
The visit, which took place on Wednesday, 19th July, 2023, aimed to strengthen ties was imbued with new landmark academic deals and concrete benefits with students and faculty of Sawyer College being the most beneficiaries from these sealed academic deals.
The sealed deals include exchange of faculty, staff and students, credit transfer programs, short term teaching sabbaticals by faculty from the two colleges, introduction of similar curricula and degree programs, semester credit transfer/study abroad at the Sharda College of Humanities and Social Sciences, semester student exchange and joint bachelor and master courses, internships and joint research projects and the publication of a social science journal.
Dr. Gray used the Wednesday’s visit to hold further discussion with the Chairpersons and Senior Professors including the heads of Departments of English, Literature, History, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Geography, Sociology, and Yogic Sciences, respectively.
During the visit, Prof Gray informed his counterpart and the faculty about the University of Liberia’s commitment to enhancing the ties exiting between UL and Sharda University, particularly the two colleges, in the face of the growing competitive academic environment. Prof. Gray used the visit to express his appreciation on behalf of the President of UL, Prof. Dr. Julius Julukon Sarwolo Nelson and the academic team of Amos C. Sawyer College.
Dr. Gray informed the faculty of the college that Amos C. Sawyer College, particularly the University under the leadership of Dr. Nelson is committed to achieve the five objectives of Higher Education; Pedagogy, Extension, Application, Research and Learning. He pinpointed that the college is on a new course of academic trajectory. At Sawyer College, students not only get a chance to study at a world-class institution but also the exposure to prove their capabilities through their work, Prof. Gray indicated.
Prof. Dr. Anviti Gupta is a Professor of Psychology, she earned her Ph.D. in Applied Psychology from the University of Lucknow. She is a certified psychological counselor and trained clinical hypnotherapist who extends her expertise in areas relating to juvenile and adolescents’ problem like anxiety, drug and alcohol abuse, materialism, peer pressure relationship issues.
Responding, Prof. Dr. Gupta praised Dr. Gray for the visit and expressed appreciation to the Administration of the University of Liberia for the weeklong visit of the high-powered UL delegation to India. According to Dr. Gupta, the Sharda School of Humanities and Social Sciences main focus is to nurture and develop cognitive and non-cognitive skills, aligned with the goals of education for sustainable development and global citizenship.
She explained that Social Sciences equip the student with a strong theoretical, analytical and empirical understanding of the subject matter and provides the very strong foundation which they believe will prepare the graduates from the college to become pragmatic professionals, competent decision and policy makers, while also being sensitive human beings.
Dr. Gupta believes that the recent visit of UL delegation in India to visit Sharda University and Sharda Hospital will lead to an open door approach, open to feedback and constructive criticism creating a ground for a sound learning experience.
Dr. Gupta expressed the urgent need to both colleges to exchange faculty, students’ semester studies exchange, undertake a joint research project and publication of a peer-reviewed journal of social sciences, and conduct short and long term studies tours to enhance the MoU, faculty development and develop student skills and equip them with the needed skills to able the students to thrive in their studies.
Dr. Gupta disclosed that within a short period of its establishment in 2012, the College has emerged as the epicenter of cultural, creative and academic activity at Sharda University with students from all over the world creating a multi-cultural environment and a vibrant network of global students.
The Sharda School of Media, Film and Entertainment is designed to enable students to develop skills to think about artistic and cultural interventions critically, develop capacities to design, assess, enact, document and facilitate creative projects that contribute to the industry including understanding the fundamental concepts and the technological and creative processes underlying different theories of creative arts and media.
