The representation of Liberian women in politics is said to be overwhelming as the October 10, 2023 elections drawing closer, with the latest Vice Presidential pick for various political parties receiving more support from women in these upcoming elections.
The latest to be announced is the daughter of the founding father of the country’s oldest political parties, the Liberty Party (LP), the late Cllr. Charles Walker Brumskine, Cllr. Charlyne Mnamah-mar was named by the Alternative National Congress (ANC)/ Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) was named as running make to Mr. Alexander Benedict Cummings.
Few weeks ago supporters of the former running Unity Party (UP) of Ambassador Joseph Nyuma Boakai opted for the naming of another female, Grand Bassa County Senator, Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence but was later downplayed by the Unity Party with the pick of Nimba County Senator, Jeremiah Kpan Koung. However, the presence of the Grand Bassa County Senator is still being felt as one of the lead supporter of Team Boakai for 2023.
Currently, Senator Jewel Howard-Taylor, the ex-wife of Liberia’s detained President, Charles Ghankay Taylor in the United Kingdom was picked as running mate to President George Manneh Weah, her pick was overwhelming received by her supporters both locally and internationally as Liberia’s first sitting Vice President.
However, news from the camp of another presidential candidate of the Liberia People’s Party (LPP), Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloe in the upcoming October 10 polls which is yet to be confirmed has speculated that Mary Broth of the General Service Agency (GSA) may likely be picked as a running mate to Cllr. Gongloe.
With this latest development in the country’s political arena, the sign of women participation in politics seems glaring, with political pundits believing that Liberia is gradually realizing the importance of women in politics.
