A group of Liberians early this week staged a daylong protest at the offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs calling on the Government of Liberia to end the usage of dangerous substances such as Kush, K2 and Koko drugs in the country, stressing that such drugs are damaging the future of the Liberian children.
Speaking to journalists during the protest, the Executive Director of Justice Forum Liberia, Ambassador Maxson S. Kpakio along with dozens of Liberian women, called for the Soniwien Community and Johnson Street Communities to be protected, in order to disallow the usage of these dangerous substances that are destroying the lives of the future leaders.
Mr. Kpakio said there are different types of Kush, Afghan Kush, Hindu Kush, Green Kush; Purple Kush, OG Kush and Bubba Kush – which are classified as the popular Kush strains of the Cannabis-indica drug family.
Director Kpakio said Kush looks a bit different from marijuana, according to consumers; its reaction on them is quite different from the reaction they get after smoking marijuana, Kush variant of marijuana is also renowned for its heavy sedative effects on its users.
He also disclosed that the drug has numerous “street names, However, some call it: Bliss, Black Mamba, Blaze, Bombay Blue, Fake Weed, Legal Weed, Genie, Zohai, all these street names, two of them stand out “Spice” and “K2”
He said research shows that Kush is grown in the mountainous regions of Pakistan, Afghanistan and some parts of India, and this drug exists in many different forms.
“Kush is one of the popular substances that have recently arrived in Liberia, this drug certainly came to the spotlight sometime around 2022/2023, other sources say that the drug arrived much earlier but was not in widespread circulation”.
Kush is a drug labeled as not meant for human consumption humans, particularly young folks, have made food and water out of the drug with dire repercussions.
Youths, who are frequent users of dangerous drugs, like, cocaine, marijuana, have resolved to take Kush for their gratification, as stated by one of the users of Kush I spoke to.
“Also speaking to some user that smoke Kush on center and Lynch Streets normally called dust road said Kush drug gives me strength and courage to do my sex work.
“Frankly, I am not happy to smoke Kush, but it is the only thing that gives me the power, strength, and courage to do my sex job,” not her real name, a commercial sex worker, Kush gives me strength to have sex with ten or more men”, she added.
Master Kush, not their real names, also indicated that they smoke Kush to feel good and get the strength and power to carry out their daily activities.
“Kush is a bad drug which can make someone get seriously embarrassed. But, now, my system has gotten used to the drug and it hardly affects me like the way it did to me the first time I took it,” master said
Meanwhile, delivering a statement to the Ministry of Health through its Minister Dr. Wilhelmina Jallah to see reason, this emergency called on the government to save lives in the county.
For his part, representing the Minister was the Assistant Minister for Administration Mr. James Forkpa said he will deliver the message to the Minister when she returns to her office.
He said fighting drugs in Liberia is everyone business; “we need to educate our child or children in fighting against drugs”
