Liberians Reportedly Detained In India For Several Crimes, Lacks Diplomatic Representation

Unconfirmed report reaching the GNN from the Indian Capital of New Delhi has disclosed that several Liberians who have traveled to that country for some reasons have reportedly been placed behind bars for several crimes being committed by them including drugs abuse, and others.

According to GNN Source in that country, since the death of Liberia Consulate, the legal representation of Liberia is currently not been felt, a situation that is suffering Liberians in that part of the world to suffer due to the lack of redress.

Our source in New Delhi further disclosed that several Liberians are currently being placed behind bars for several crimes allegedly been committed including drugs and other offenses, according to our source, they cannot be released due to the absence of Liberia Consulate General in that country.

One of those reportedly detained is a Liberian only identified as Jerome has been behind bars for over three months after he was arrested following a pandemonium which broke out at the local UN office in Delhi where he reportedly had gone to seek for help; was arrested and since then he has been in detention.

Another situation being faced with a Liberian woman whose husband is an Indian national is finding it very difficult to survive following the arrest and detention of her Indian husband who has been in jail for other three years. GNN source said the Liberian woman; a mother of two is finding it very hard to survive along with her two kids, a boy and a girl.

Liberian consulates in Japan and China when contacted, according to GNN sources, both allegedly declined to assist, noting that this matter is above their respective jurisdictions, and further urged victims’ families to contact the Liberia Ministry of Foreign Affairs for redress.

Effort by the GNN to contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs proved unsuccessful, our team is expected once again to make follow up on the issue.
