Big upset at ITF Junior tourney

The second International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior tournament got underway this week, with a huge upset when the boys’ top seed Aryan Jit Singh was eliminated.

Singh, who won last week’s ITF J30 Junior tournament after beating Victor Tausen of Sweden in the final, went down in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 to the unseeded Jan Nowacki of Poland.

The rest of the top seeded players progressed comfortably to the second round.

The second seeded Mark Nawa of Botswana beat Namibia’s Joel Hiveluah 6-0, 6-1; the third seeded Takura Mhwandagara of Zimbabwe beat Victor Tausen of Sweden 7-6, 4-5 and the fourth seeded Mateya Stanisavljevic of Serbia beat the unseeded Antoni Kosyrz of Poland 6-2, 6-4.

The seventh seeded Mudiwa Munyimani of Australia beat the unseeded Sarel Janse van Rensburg of Namibia, while the unseeded Lukas Andersson of Sweden beat Ruan Calitz of Namibia 6-0, 6-0. In matches yesterday, the eighth seeded Oscar Reilly of The Netherlands beat the unseeded Dian Calitz of Namibia 6-3, 6-1; the unseeded Birk Arwedahl of Sweden beat Seabo Saleshando of Botswana 6-1, 6-3; the fifth seeded Maciej Zarebski of Poland beat Juan Kuhn of Namibia 6-1, 6-0; and the unseeded Ruben Merchan of Spain beat Daniel Krige of South Africa 6-1, 6-0. In the girls’ singles competition, the third-seeded Carle Botha beat Axelle van Beurden of Belgium 6-3, 6-1, while the fourth seeded Tadiwanashe Mauchi of Zimbabwe beat Anna Maria Payer of Austria 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.

Another Zimbabwean, the unseeded Julie Tungamirai beat Nina Sekonopo of Botswana 6-0, 6-2, while the fifth seed, Tamina Kochta of Germany beat Namibia’s Joanivia Bezuidenhout 6-0, 6-2.

The unseeded Julia Hillebrand of Germany beat Hannah Claes of Belgium 6-2, 6-0, while Lena Rajca of Poland beat Noor Vanspauwen of Belgium who withdrew after trailing 1-0.
