How do you respond to losing your ace and two-time Cy Young Award winner?

Sign another ace, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, two-time World Series champion and one of the greatest pitchers of our generation.

Steve Cohen made a statement on Monday signing Justin Verlander after Jacob deGrom decided to sign with the Rangers. Verlander is 40 years old next season, but he’s still pitching at the top of his game, winning the AL Cy Young with the Astros last season and helping the team to a World Series. Verlander makes the Mets a better team and gives them a shot at a title of their own in 2023 and 2024.

To react to signing Verlander, deGrom going to the Rangers and look ahead to what else the Mets may do in free agency, we bring you an emergency episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and me.

Amazin’ But True Podcast with Jake Brown & Nelson Figueroa:

  • VERLANDER A STUD: Sure, $86 million is a lot of money, but Steve Cohen has it. Two years of Verlander made more sense than five years of deGrom.
  • DEGONE: DeGrom clearly did not love playing in New York. He wanted more money and maybe somewhere he enjoyed living more. The Rangers were willing to go to five years and an option for a sixth and he took the $188 million.
  • NIMMO: Should the Mets give Brandon Nimmo a big contract? He’s a great player, but is he worth a six-year, $150 million contract? The center field market is pretty slim, so they may have to pay to bring him back.
  • FREE AGENCY: Should the Mets sign another infielder? Do they roll with Brett Baty and Eduardo Escobar at third base? What should they do with the other spots in the rotation? Taillon? Senga? Rodon? Bassitt? Walker?
