A five-year-old student was found with a gun magazine and ammunition in their backpack at an upstate New York elementary school this week, local officials said Wednesday.

The disturbing discovery took place Monday at Porter Elementary School in Syracuse, the Syracuse Police Department told The Post.

“At this point, it does not appear that the child knew [about the items],” Lt. Matthew Malinowski said of the youngster, who is in kindergarten.

“The case is still active and the investigation is ongoing.”

The student did not have a firearm in their bag, only the magazine and ammunition, according to NBC.

A gun magazine is the ammunition storage and feeder for a repeating firearm. Some guns have attached models, but others can be removed and carried separately.

The Syracuse City School District did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

The Syracuse incident occurred exactly one month after a six-year-old at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, shot his first-grade teacher.

The school’s assistant vice principal, Dr. Ebony Parker, subsequently resigned amid allegations that administrators failed to address three reports about the armed student on the day of the shooting.
