James Gunn Called Tone Deaf For Labeling ‘The Flash’ “The Greatest Superhero Movie Ever” After Ezra Miller’s Controversial Behavior

DC fans have been waiting for an update on Ezra Miller’s standing with the studio after he was the culprit of multiple incidents in Hawaii and was accused of grooming minors and leading a cult, among other things. While unveiling the first chapter of the DC Universe at a press conference yesterday (Jan. 30), CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran gave a surprisingly optimistic update on the actor and their future with the superhero franchise.

According to Variety, Safran stated that Miller (who uses they/them pronouns) is “completely committed to their recovery.”

The CEO added, “We are fully supportive of that journey they are on right now. When the time is right, when they are ready to have that discussion, we will all figure out what’s the best path forward.”

Safran concluded, “And in our conversation with them, in the last couple of months, it feels like they are making enormous progress.”

Last August, Miller broke the silence about their controversial behavior and issued an apology through a shared statement. “Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment,” they said.

“I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life,” the actor added.

The statement was issued shortly after The Hollywood Reporter published a story alleging that Warner Bros. had prepared three different scenarios for the future of The Flash, which involved removing Miller from the marketing and press for the movie or killing it altogether, despite its $200 million budget.

Fans were shocked by the two CEOs’ flippancy regarding the situation, especially after Gunn referred to the movie as “probably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made.” In response, one Twitter user wrote, “Ezra Miller must have video evidence of someone at Warner bros committing murder.”

Another tweeted, “Gunn’s genuine-sounding excitement for The Flash just makes the whole Ezra Miller situation even sadder.” A third chimed in with, “Ezra Miller and Jared Leto have the best blackmail on the film industry I’ve ever seen.” Others have been name-dropping the shelved Batgirl movie and other celebrities who have been ousted from future DC projects, including Gal Gadot, Henry Cavill, and Dwayne Johnson.

I know it’s unrealistic to expect the studio to shelve a $200M movie. But some acknowledgment should be made of the harm Ezra Miller has cause. And there should be some accountability for their behavior. #DCStudios https://t.co/43SsSok31J

The Flash is set to premiere Jun. 16 in theaters, following the release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which stars Zachary Levi, who found himself in the face of controversy this weekend after tweeting seemingly anti-vax messages. The line-up will continue with Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

The first chapter, titled “Gods and Monster”, of Gunn and Safran’s DC slate features four series and six movies, including Batman: The Brave and The Bold. Decider’s Alex Zalben expressed hesitancy towards this ambitious slate, writing, “The company [Warner Bros.] has been selling off assets like it’s a going out of business sale, and if you think that they won’t ditch Gunn and his plan the second Superman: Legacy comes in softer at the box office than expected, you haven’t been paying attention to the entire history of Hollywood.”

With Miller, Twitter, and the big-wigs at Warner Bros. working against Gunn, it’ll be a miracle if he pulls this off.
