Mindy Kaling Says ‘The Office’ Is “Inappropriate” and Would Be “Canceled” in 2022

While visiting Good Morning America, Mindy Kaling had some choice words to say about the NBC sitcom The Office and whether it would fare well nowadays. The actor called the show “inappropriate” and said she would “maybe never” show it to her children.

Kaling served as an original cast member and writer of the series, and also held the role of executive producer alongside her close friend B.J. Novak, as the show aired from 2005 to 2013. While it’s undeniable that the sitcom has left its mark on popular culture, she joked it didn’t age well.

She was asked about when she plans to introduce The Office to her children, Katherine and Spencer, to which she answered, “I kind of think, maybe never.”

Saying that the show is “so inappropriate now,” Kaling explained, “The writers who I’m still in touch with now, we always talk about how so much of that show we probably couldn’t make now.”

She continued, “Tastes have changed, and honestly what offends people has changed so much now. I think that actually is one of the reasons the show is popular, because people feel like there’s something kind of fearless about it or taboo that it talks about on the show.”

However, if her children decided they want to watch the series, it sounds like she won’t stand in the way. “I think when they’re teenagers they’ll probably want to, it seems like 15-year-old boys are the biggest fans of The Office right now,” said Kaling.

During her visit, she also reflected on where her character, meme-queen Kelly Kapoor (cue the “Number one: How dare you?” gifs), would be up to in 2022. “I think she would have quit Dunder Mifflin to become an influencer, and then [she] probably been canceled almost immediately,” said Kaling. “That’s what I would see for her. Actually, most of the characters on that show would be canceled by now.”

Canceled or not, The Office is an American adaptation of Ricky Gervais’s British TV series of the same name. Joining Kaling and Novak, the cast was led by Steve Carell and starred John Krasinski, Jenna Fisher, Angela Kinsey, Rainn Wilson, and others, as employees of the office supply wholesale company Dunder Mifflin.

Kaling surely knows the show from front-to-back given her heavy involvement, but it’s clear that it has survived the test of time. In 2020, the sitcom was named the most-streamed TV show by Nielsen (back when it was streaming on Netflix). And then, upon NBC acquiring exclusive streaming rights for Peacock, the show was available to stream for free for a limited time, along with bonus content, to ensure a smooth transfer.

It seems that the show is doing pretty well in 2022, even if the odds are stacked against it.

The Office is currently streaming on Peacock.
