What to Watch on Disney+ Before ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’

The next installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is just around the corner. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania hits theaters on February 17, and with it comes the official beginning of Phase 5.

The movie catches up with Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) in the aftermath of saving the world in Avengers: Endgame as he enjoys newfound fame and hopes to reconnect with his daughter, Cassie (Kathryn Newton, in her MCU debut). The movie will also reintroduce viewers to the latest intergalatic, multiversal threat to our heroes across the entire universe: Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors.

As is the case with most things in the MCU, you’re probably going to need to know a little bit of background before you check out the latest film.

All of these movies, plus nearly the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe (sorry, fans of The Incredible Hulk and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies), can be streamed on Disney+. Right now, you can get three months of Disney+ with ads for $6.99/month before reverting back to the regular price of $7.99/month. If ads aren’t your thing, the ad-free Disney+ plan costs $10.99/month.

Luckily, there’s a lot less homework involved with this one, but you’ll still want to be caught up on Ant-Man’s journey so far before heading back into the quantum realm.

As the title implies, this movie’s all about Ant-Man. It’s the origin story which explains how Scott Lang went from an engineer to a criminal to Ant-Man. It also introduces Hank Pym (Michael Dougas), the creator of the Pym Particles that make Ant-Man shrink, and his daughter, Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), who assumes the mantle of Wasp in a post-credit scene.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR (2016)

In Captain America: Civil War, Ant-Man becomes an Avenger… sort of. In the battle of Iron Man vs. Captain America, Ant-Man is recruited by Falcon to fight on Cap’s side. The film reveals a new side of the Ant-Man suit, too; Giant-Man makes his debut. So not only can he shrink really small, but he can grow larger than a jet plane.

Welcome to the quantum realm! We get our first glimpse at that great beyond when Scott, under house arrest for his involvement in Civil War, receives a message from who he assumes is Janet van Dyne, Hope’s mom and Hank’s wife who they believed to be trapped inside the realm. The film shows that sub-atomic travel into and out of the quantum realm is possible, which is important because Quantumania seems to be taking place primarily inside the realm.

AVENGERS: ENDGAME (2019)

In this movie, which signified the end of a major era for the MCU, Scott returns from the quantum realm, having been caught there when the Blip happened five years earlier. Using his knowledge of quantum physics, time travel, and the few Pym Particles he has left, the Avengers rally around Scott’s idea to pull off a time heist to save the universe and bring back everyone they lost. (Spoiler alert: it works.)

LOKI SEASON 1, EPISODE 6 — “FOR ALL TIME. ALWAYS.” (2021)

Possibly more than any Ant-Man movie on this list, Loki Season 1, Episode 6 is required viewing heading into Quantumania. Why? Jonathan Majors, of course. Nearly a year after it was first announced that he’d be joining the Ant-Man cast as Kang the Conqueror, Majors made a surprise appearance in the season finale of Loki, though not as Kang. He played He Who Remains, the puppetmaster behind the inner workings of the Time Variance Authority.

Because Loki introduced the concept of variants into the MCU, it’s likely He Who Remains and Kang are variants — of who remains unclear, but with Majors signed onto at least one more MCU film, the story won’t end here or in Quantumania.

If you want a crash course on all things Ant-Man without having to watch all of the movies, three new episodes of Marvel Studios: Legends are dropping on Disney+ on February 10. Each episode briefly goes through a character’s MCU appearances to catch viewers up before their next big appearance. The three episodes will cover Ant-Man, Wasp, and Hank & Janet.
