Remnants of downgraded Ian bring rain, chill over drought-stricken NYC

The remnants of the former Hurricane Ian began sliding over the northeastern US Saturday, casting chilly, soggy conditions over the New York City area.

Two to four inches of rain fell in the metro area Saturday, with air temperatures remaining in the 50s — and more of the same expected Sunday.

“It’s going to be one of those weekends to cozy up indoors,” said Mike Rawlins of Fox Weather.

Intermittent downpours Sunday could add up to two additional inches to the total rainfall in some spots, Rawlins said — welcome news after a dry summer.

“Most of the region remains in a moderate to severe drought,” Rawlins noted. “So while this rain is much needed, it won’t wipe away the growing deficit for the area.”

Since June 1, 13.8 inches of rain have fallen at Central Park, well under the historic 18-inch average.

This summer has been the second driest on record at John F. Kennedy International Airport, where just over 7 inches of rain fell since June 1, according to Fox Weather.
