Union Minister RK Ranjan Singh’s Imphal residence was attacked for the second time in two months as protestors during a women’s rally threw stones at him and demanded that he address the issue of ethnic strife in the state in Parliament.
However, according to a report by PTI, nobody was inside the house at the time of the attack, and minor damage was done to it. The protestors, who also demanded the restoration of internet connections, were dispersed by security personnel stationed at home in Imphal’s Kongba locality.
“We demand that the minister speaks in Parliament about the situation in the state. We want internet services back. We want to tell people what is happening to us,” one of the protestors said, media outlets reported.
A mob had earlier on June 15 attempted to set fire to the minister’s home, but the security officers and firefighters were able to put out the fires and save the house.
The minister’s home has been attacked by a mob twice. During the incident in May, security personnel fired into the air to disperse the gathering.
Nine people, including women, were recently killed as new violence broke out in the state.
After violence erupted in the state in May, at least 40 suspected militants, as well as two police officers, were killed.
The state has been on edge since interethnic violence spiked last month, which led to at least 100 fatalities, numerous injuries, and thousands of displaced persons.
The violent demonstration led more than 30,000 thousand people to flee their homes for their safety, necessitating the federal government’s dispatch of thousands of troops to maintain security in the state.
