The Mia-Mottley led administration has done little to fix the issues facing the country since it came into power, claims President of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Dr Ronnie Yearwood.
Admitting that there were outstanding matters the Barbadian population had to deal with after the former DLP government was voted out of office in 2018, he insisted that many of these continued to plague the island in spite of the promises made by the incoming administration.
“They talk about how much money they have in the Central Bank reserves – borrowed! $14 billion still in debt. Debt restructuring and we are still back at $14 billion. These are the issues. The sewage, yes, it is not flowing in the streets but it is flowing in the swamps. It isn’t fixed. Nothing has been fixed. The buses are still back at 65. The garbage doesn’t get picked up for three and four weeks in places and this is across the island,” he said at the DLP’s St Philip South branch meeting on the topic, Unmasking the Incompetence of the Government: Suggestions for Making Government Work.
“These are basic things…. Until we face up to where we are as a country, we will not get better.”
He told the audience at Clara’s Bar and Restaurant in Nursery, St Philip that the 2022 Auditor General’s report which was recently laid in Parliament clearly outlined the incompetence of the Mia Mottley-led administration.
“For example, there is no clear recording of government property, there is no clear recording of overseas travel advances. The government sinking fund, which is the money government uses to clear off debt, there’s no schedule, there’s no clear notes on the interest that the government had borrowed and whether it is variable or not….
“All of these are issues facing this country, and what is most heartbreaking is that the ones who were hurt the most are the people of this country,” Yearwood said while chastising the Government for not owning up to its mistakes.
