iciHaiti - Agriculture : A biological pesticide against insect pests

Pests are the worst enemies of plants. They severely limit crop yield. In Haiti, several species of plants have disappeared in recent years and others are endangered due to deforestation, climate change and the aggression of harmful insects among others...

To combat the aggressiveness of insect pests, chemical pesticides are often used. However, the economic precariousness of most Haitian farmers does not allow them to have access to these products in sufficient quantity.

Thus, the biological pesticide is an ideal alternative, particularly one based on the leaves and seeds of neem, a small tree found throughout the country, commonly called "lila" in Haiti.

Neem deters insects that attack plants while limiting their ability to reproduce. The preparation of this pesticide does not require a high technicality.

In Cap Haitien, during the practical and ecological session carried out by the "Institut de la Francophonie pour le développement durable" (IFDD), young people from the 4 departments of the Great North of Haiti learned how to produce and use biological pesticides based on of neem with sprayers. This will allow them to reduce the cost of their production and to share this method with the farmers of their community.
