A ‘military reconnaissance satellite’ has been launched, according to North Korea.

North Korea has confirmed that it plans to launch a military reconnaissance satellite before June 11th. The country had previously informed Japan of these intentions. On Tuesday, Pyongyang launched what it described as a space launch vehicle towards the south. Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that the projectile flew over the Yellow Sea without affecting the metropolitan area. North Korea claims the new satellite will improve its ability to track, monitor, and respond to US and vassal forces’ dangerous military actions. The country criticised US-South Korea joint military exercises and felt the need to expand reconnaissance and information means and improve various defensive and offensive weapons. The proposed launch has faced criticism from Tokyo and Seoul who say it violates UN sanctions against any tests using ballistic missile technology. Developing the ability to put a satellite in orbit would provide cover for testing banned intercontinental ballistic missiles. Following last year’s declaration that North Korea is an “irreversible” nuclear power, Kim Jong Un has identified spy satellites as a key defence project for the country’s military.
